Record prize money for Wimbledon winners

It has today been announced that the winners of this year’s men’s and women’s singles at Wimbledon will earn record prize money of £1 million. Do you think that this is excessive?

I agree. I was discussing this with a friend last night and we looked at it from the same angle. If you compare Wimbledon, a tennis grand slam, to one of golf’s majors, say the Masters, the prize money is about the same so it isn’t out of line with other individual sports. I also am in favour of equal pay for men and women but I think your point about the number of sets could well become a major talking point in the future.

The money does sound alot to us mere mortals but when compared to other sports such as golf and F1, maybe it’s not so absurd. Also equal amounts of prize money is good for the game. True, men play more tennis but in terms of fairness the rules in the amount of sets played should be adjusted not the money if we are to continue to attract the best of the best. Assuming extra money is being filtered down to rising stars. Maybe I’m just a rambling baffoon!
